One of the very common tasks on different FIRST Technical Challenge competitions is to collect objects. In this case, these are colourful specifically shaped plastic object or in simple terms - balls.

Collecting the balls

Collecting object on FIRST Technical Challenge Robotics competitions is just the first task of a series of missions to be accomplished. Usually, after collecting them you must also store them and then throw them to another place. 

For collecting the balls we would use a plastic plate connected on a rotating axle.

In this tutorial and the next few tutorials from this series of tutorials in the course we'll start with one of the very common tasks in different FIRST Technical Challenge Competitions and this is the task for collecting different objects. In our case these are balls and we've constructed a robot that can collect these balls.

Let's discuss in more details the construction and the principle of this robot. Collecting the balls is always just the first task of a more complex task. In different FIRST Technical Challenge you collect different objects like balls, then you move them and then you throw them. So, we stopped here only at collecting and we discuss different ways to collect the balls with one specific attachment. To achieve this we must first modify the PushBot. This here is the construction of the PushBot that we've discussed in previous videos and we've provided the building instructions. And we must modify this PushBot. We must remove the arm. We must change this side of the robot to free some space for collecting the balls. This is the first thing that we should do. Then we must move and add one more motor here a third motor here. And connect some axle with some plastic to make the whole mechanism collect balls. So, we've separated this in three different tutorials that follow in the next few sections of the course.
