How our LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robots make turns Pro Preview

Given that the robot has two motors powering respectively the left side and the right side of the robot then when turning the robot is always turning in an arc. Depending on the turn this arc could be with a different size and radius.

Turns

1. In an arc:

Motor B is moving faster than motor C. The robot is moving in this way:

3.1

This turn is used when we want the robot to turn smoothly. It will move in an arc and a circle. The faster Motor B is moving and the slower motor C is moving the circle gets smaller and smaller and the turns get sharper.

2. Turn with one motor:

This turn happens when one of the motors is stopped. Returning back to the turn in an arc in the previous section. What will happen if motor C is stopped. The answer is that the robot will start turning in a circle, but only with one of the wheels.

3.2

In this turn the robot is moving in a circle. Compared to the first way, where the size of the circle was determined by the power of the motors, in this turn the size of the circle is always the same. The radius is equal to the distance between the wheels of the robot. On the scene it is shown as blue.

3. Turning in place

Motors are moving in different directions. In this turn one of the motors is moving forward and one is moving backwards. The robot is moving as shown in the scheme:

3.3

In this turn the circle drawn by robot has it center in the center of the robot. The radius of the circle is half the distance between wheels of the robot. The robot is turning in place. This turn could be used when there is not enough space for maneuvering - like a tunnel.
