Teacher's Note: Demonstrate programming a robot on a computer

Children tend to imitate. The easiest way to do something is to first see how it’s done. So, sit down and show your students how to program.

Sit down in the class room

Do not use a projector. It is important for students to see your hands on the keyboard and the mouse. It would be best to use one of their computers and not your personal laptop.

When you show how to program on a computer before everybody

Clearly state what you expect from your students:

  • To stand behind you so that everybody could see the screen;

  • To only watch and remember what you show. They will be able to try to program after the demonstration.

How to show so that your students will remember

Try to maintain the dialogue ongoing so that you engage the students’ attention. You may ask questions about each item and what they would do in a certain situation. Repeat loudly the correct answers.

What can you show

Show your students the whole process together with all mistakes they might make. Show them how to:

  • find and run the software;
  • name the program;
  • find the block palette;
  • insert a movement block;
  • set the movement block;
  • load the program to the robot;
    • unsuccessful load due to a disconnected power cable;
    • unsuccessful load due to a robot which is not switched on;
  • find the program in the robot;
  • run the program on the floor;
  • insert cables (we have not included this point so far on purpose)
  • run the robot with only one connected cable (the behavior of the engine)
  • correct run
  • change the length of the path
  • change the software only and run the previous program in the robot (!);
  • load again the program in the robot;
  • End of the demonstration. It is time your students started practicing.
