Free constructions without instructions are challenge for the teamwork in a pair because both students have their own different ideas and prefer to try them out instead of talk over the ideas and reach mutual solution. Talking to students that they should discuss and forcing them to do so usually has virtually no effect, but must be applied every time. Over time students will learn how to communicate effectively.

Short-term resolutions for a non-communicating team could be:

  • Split the pair in two - each student builds one module and modules must be combined to make a robot. For example, one could build motors and the other could build sensors.
  • Another approach tossing a coin and the winner will build his idea this time. Next time the other one will create his idea.
  • At all times both students must be involved in the building process, otherwise the passive one will get bored, he will use his time ineffectively and will ruin the discipline in the classroom. A teacher should always monitor how involved the students are and should give guidance.
