FLL 2021: Flip a switch - How to accomplish the Switch Engine mission

This video tutorial demonstrates an attachment that flips a mission model. The mission model is attached to the field, but it contains a lever. This lever must be flipped from one side to the other. There is a switch. We use a pinless active attachment with gear wheels, and you can see how this works in the tutorial. There is no use of sensors as we don't need them. We will leave the alignment and positioning for some other tutorials.

Switch Engine M05 FIRST LEGO League 2021-2022 Cargo Connect Challenge

Energy efficiency plays an important role in transportation. Switch your diesel engine for electric. You will save money while being environmentally friendly.

Score

If the diesel engine has been switched for an electric one so that the yellow bar rests all the way down/south: 20

FLLCasts tip

The diesel engine can be switched for an electric engine by lifting the lever quickly (but not too quickly as the lever may reach its end position and turn back). Another option is to hit the diesel engine using a horizontal movement of the attachment and thus turn it into an electric one. The third option is to rotate the lever and wait for a split second before releasing the lever to guarantee the lever won’t bounce back to its original position.

FLL 2021: Flip a switch - 10 out of 10 on how to accomplish the Switch Engine mission

This is a 10 out of 10 tutorial, demonstrating the consistency and reliability of the active attachment for switching the engine in this mission. The power is transferred through a system of gear wheels to a lever at the end. We presume that the robot is already positioned.

Alternative model

Here are building instructions for an alternative model if you don't have the parts for the original mission model. If you don't have the parts for the Alternative model either, then you should try to build your own model with which you can try to accomplish the mission.

Power switch mission model from LEGO Education SPIKE Prime for FLLCasts Off-season Challenge, in 3D building instructions

This is the Prime Power Switch mission as we've designed it for FLLCasts Off-season Challenge. It it a useful mission to accomplish with different attachments and approaches. The mission is to rotate the lever of the mission model.

The LEGO Mindstorms EV3 version of this mission model is available at Power Switch mission model. FLLCasts Off-season Challenge

Build the original mission attachment, the "Alternative", if it is suggested, or build your own "Alternative model"

The goal of the "Alternative model" is to be close to the real one, but because we don't have the parts we need, we come up with our own. If you've decided to build one on your own, take a picture and upload it to share with other team members and have it as a history of what you've built.

Example robots, attachments, and programs

Below you can find robots, attachments, and programs that could be used for accomplishing the mission. Feel free to modify them if you've built an "Alternative model" and are accomplishing an "Alternative mission". Use the robots, attachments, and programs as inspiration.

Gazon, LEGO Education SPIKE Prime competition robot

The story goes like this. Two engineers meet at a bar (or on discord during the pandemic) discussing which robot to use for this year's FIRST LEGO League 2020 Replay Solution and Review with explanations. They started their cameras, had a hot Carolina Reaper, had an argument, hugged each other, and decided to build Gazon, and use this new robot for the competition. So here it is. Small, 4 motors, 2 color sensors, stable, light.

This attachment was intended for and tested on the Gazon, LEGO Education SPIKE Prime competition robot. It is meant to help the robot complete the 5th mission of the FLL Cargo Connect competition.

Scratch (Word Blocks) program to solve the M5 switch engine mission

This program was intended for and tested on the Gazon, LEGO Education SPIKE Prime competition robot with the Cargo Connect M05 Switch Engine attachment. It is meant to help the robot complete the 5th mission of the FLL Cargo Connect competition.
