Introduction
In this lesson, we will build and program a sumo robot for a sumo competition!
Have you seen a sumo robotics competition? Have you participated in one?
Sumo robotics is a very popular category, not only in LEGO robotics but also in non-LEGO robotics! The rules are simple: two robots start on a circular mat, and the first robot to be pushed out of the circle loses! You can also lose if your robot stops moving. The judge can declare a draw if the two robots are locked together for a long time. Good luck!
Construction and Theory
In this lesson, you will have the opportunity to design your own LEGO Sumo robot! Usually, in a competition, there are strict rules about the size and weight of the robot as these factors make a huge difference in fights. We will take a more relaxed approach; you can build anything as long as everyone has fun!
For your information, here are some example rules: the size of your robot is usually limited to 20x20 square centimeters, with weight categories of 500g, 1kg, and 3kg!
After building the robot, close the box to keep the desk clear.
- Gather all the parts from the desk and put them back in the box.
- Close the box and move it aside so it's out of your way.
Programming and Theory
The programming today is also relatively open-ended. There are many strategies you can use in sumo battles. What will your strategy be? Let's first ensure your robot can move forward, and then we can continue with your chosen strategy!
Bonus Tasks
These tasks are optional and can only be solved by students who have completed all the main tasks and received confirmation from their teacher.
